I’m fixing my 40GB PS3 tomorrow which has the Yellow light of death. I’m fixing it with a heat gun and thermal compound. I want some tips for it, also I want some tips on how to make it last long after I fix it, obviously i must keep it cool…
1st time I fixed it: lasted 3 weeks and I didn’t keep it cool.
2nd time I fixed it: lasted 5 months and I did keep it cool…. but, I didn’t keep it cool when the system had just turned off since there was always heat at that time.
Now it will be the 3rd time I fix it. I’m just hoping it will work for a year, a year is my target, I’m going to fix it and when I play it, the PS3 will be opened up and a small desk fan will be facing the power supply unit, towards the small holes on it, which keeps it cool, and hopefully will keep the motherboard cool. Also I’ll point the fan at it after I turn it off for a minimum of 5 minutes.

There is really no tips to make it last long after you fix it. Its really luck some heat gunned fixed ps3s last 2 weeks some last 2 years it really depends.
To fix the yellow light of death your best bet is to find a used or broken ps3 for cheap and change the HDD from that one to your one,
Dust your machine regularly. Any PS3 owner will tell you that the Playstation 3 is a dust magnet. Just run a dry cloth over it every couple days, and you should be fine. This will help prevent heat issues and shorts that may occur.
